Project funding for establishment of the Cancer Research Center Cologne Essen (CCCE) was provided by the State Ministry of Culture and Science NRW on January 31, 2019. At each of the CCCE sites, Cologne and Essen, two CCCE professorships (W3) and two CCCE junior groups positions were established.

The cooperation contract between the Universities of Cologne and Duisburg-Essen and the University Hospitals Essen and Cologne was signed in March 2019 to formally establish the Cancer Research Center Cologne Essen (CCCE) as a joint cancer research center of both universities and university hospitals.

Following a highly competitive scientific review process, the CCCE was selected as one of the in total six sites of the extended National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in September 2020. The NCT receives long-term funding by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the State NRW to promote internationally leading translational cancer research, foster patient access to the latest innovations in personalized oncology and diagnostics, and to streamline the transfer of cancer research into clinical application to the benefit of patients. The CCCE represents the contribution of the state NRW to this national effort.
